Abraham Demoz Prize

Each year, the Linguistics Department awards a prize for the best undergraduate work in linguistics in memory of Professor Abraham Demoz, one of the founding members of the department. (The award may be split between two students; a prize for "Honorable Mention" may also be awarded.) For more information on Professor Demoz and past award winners, follow the links at the top.

Starting in Spring, 2009, the department has adopted new procedures for the award. In recognition of the fact that much of the best work of our undergraduates takes place in the context of larger lab projects and research groups, the work that qualifies for the Demoz award is no longer limited to term papers. Furthermore, to ensure that students' contributions are adequately evaluated despite the different ways in which excellence may manifest itself in different contexts, students no longer apply for the Demoz prize themselves, but are nominated by their faculty supervisors. Students who would like to be considered for the award should therefore discuss the matter with their advisors. With any other questions about the award, please contact the Director of Undergraduate Studies.
