Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs
Language and Cognition
One of Northwestern's oldest interdisciplinary programs, Language and Cognition was founded in 1982 by Jim Wertsch (Prof. and Chair of Linguistics), Doris Johnson (Prof. of Communication Sciences and Disorders), and Gil Krulee (Prof. of Industrial Engineering, Linguistics, and Psychology). It serves as a university-wide meeting ground for researchers interested in speech and language science, in cognition, and in their connections. It sponsors a colloquium series and three graduate student fellowships/TAships.
The colloquium series is held three times per quarter on Monday afternoons at 4:00 PM in Francis Searle. Each quarter is organized around a theme proposed by a faculty member.
Two entering graduate fellowships and one TAship are competitively awarded each year to students with interdisciplinary research interests in the areas covered by the program. Students are nominated for the program by their home department. In recent years, awards have been given to students in Communication Sciences and Disorders, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Linguistics, and Psychology. Awards are made by the Language and Cognition Steering Committee:
