Linguistics Groups

The Linguistics Department is home to numerous special-interest groups whose activities contribute to a vibrant intellectual environment. Most such groups are composed of students and faculty from Linguistics and other deparments at Northwestern or elsewhere in the Chicago area. Only a small sampling is represented on this site.

Auditory Neuroscience Journal Club

The Auditory Neuroscience Journal Club discusses recent research in neuroscience, emphasizing neurophysiology and imaging of the central auditory system. Of particular interest are connections of this research area to recent developments on learning disabilities. The club meets on alternate Mondays at 2pm in Frances Searle 2-233. For more information, contact Karen Banai.

Game Theory and Meaning

The Game Theory and Meaning project focuses on the application of methods from Game Theory to problems in the study of natural language meaning. Recent work (e.g. the work of Jäger, Merin, and van Rooij) has recast pragmatic analyses in Game-Theoretic terms. This work suggests new experimental paradigms in which to test the predictions of the Game-Theoretic approach to meaning, but has not yet addressed the empirical question of how closely their models resemble what speakers and hearers actually do. Our project is focused on experimental and agent-based simulation work that will contribute to the development and evaluation of the Game-Theoretic paradigm for analyzing natural language meaning.
